Peking University, Apr 11, 2017: At the invitation of Peking University Global Fellowship, Wolfgang Schluchter, an eminent socialist and sociological professor emeritus at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, is visiting Peking University from April 6 to May 1, during which he will deliver 4 lectures.

Introduction of the lecturer:
Wolfgang Schluchter is an eminent socialist and sociological professor emeritus at the University of Heidelberg Germany. He graduated as a PhD student from the Free University of Berlin in 1967, obtained habilitation at the University of Mannheim in 1972, and worked as a social science professor at the University of Düsseldorf from 1973 to 1976. From 1976 to his retirement in the year 2006, he was a professor of sociology at the University of Heidelberg Germany, during which he also took up several positions at various colleges and research centers in Germany and Italy, including associate professor at the University of Erfurt, dean of Max Weber Center for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies. At present, he is a member of both German and Italian National Academy of Sciences.
Heidelberg's main research domain covers the theory of sociology, sociology of religion, sociology of politics, and comparative Cultural Studies. Max Weber, the founder of modern sociology, is in particular Heidelberg’s focus of study. Recognized as a leading scholar in the study of Weber’s sociological theories, Heidelberg has produced a series of works, including Max Weber’s Vision of History: Ethics and Methods (with Guenthur Roth.1979), The Rise of Western Rationalism (1981), Rationalism, Religion, and Domination (1989), Paradoxes of Modernity. Culture and Conduct in the Theory of Max Weber (1996),Max Weber and Islam (1999), Public Spheres and Collective Identities (edited with Shmuel N. Eisenstadt and Björn Wittrock) and etc
