[Lecture] IO Course: WTO and Careers in International Trade

The world has witnessed dramatic transformation with the convergence of globalization and value chain integration. As the symbol and flagship of global economic governance, World Trade Organization plays a significant role in coordinating and facilitating international trade and investment. Meanwhile, it encounters several unprecedented challenges such as US-China trade conflicts and the suspension of Dispute Settlement Mechanism.

How to restore and safeguard the prestige of WTO? How can we get through the backlash of de-globalization and unilateralism? We need an answer.

Speaker: 
Tatiana Prazeres, PhD, is Senior Fellow at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China. She teaches international trade in a master’s program and leads research projects in the areas of WTO, trade and investment. She holds a PhD in International Relations, and degrees in Law and International Relations.

She is also a Member of the Advisory Board of the Geneva School of Economics and Management at the University of Geneva.

Prior to these appointments, she was Senior Advisor to the Director General of the World Trade Organization between 2013 and 2018. Her portfolio included trade negotiations, market access, services, investment, agriculture, trade & environment and engagement with the private sector.

Before that, at the age of 31, she became the youngest ever Secretary of Foreign Trade of Brazil (vice-ministerial position). During her term, she reformed Brazil’s trade remedies system, advanced trade facilitation reforms, and secured government’s approval to pursue negotiations on investment agreements.

Tatiana Prazeres is a Member of the World Economic Forum's Network of Experts in International Trade and Investment.

In 2014, she was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader.

IO Course:
The “IO Career Series” (International Organization Career Development Program) was launched by the Student Career Center of Peking University in February 2017. Till now, more than 40 “IO Career Series” events have been successfully organized. These events included: “IO Talk” (International Organization High-level Forum); “IO Course” (International Organization Career Course); “IO Salon” (International Organization Career Salon); “IO Visit” (International Organization Career Visit).

The IO Course mainly invites heads from regional offices of international organizations and senior experts to introduce the career development path in international organizations. Keynote speakers previously included Yang Wenyan, chief of Global Dialogue on Social Development Branch in the Division for Inclusive Social Development of UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Rana Flowers, UNICEF Representative in Vietnam and Marielza Oliveria, director and representative of the UNESCO Beijing Office.
