Mar 20, 2018
Peking University, March 20, 2018: During February 28 to March 3, 2018, a group of researchers from Peking University (PKU) went to The Wudalianchi Scenic Area for investigation and survey. The group is made up of School of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) and other 5 schools from PKU.

Wudalianchi Volcano Group is known as  “Volcano Museum” for its complete, typical and spectacular volcanic landscape. Being the first reserved volcanic nature in China, Wudalianchi Volcano group is famous for its world-class distinctive features in the field of volcanic topography, valuable animals and plants, and high-quality mineral water. As a result, it is not only a scenic spot where tourists appreciate various wonderful volcanic scenery, but also a scientific research base for volcanic geology.

From March 1 to 2, the research team investigated Longmen Shizhai, Volcano Museum, Laoheishan, Nanbei Medicine Spring and other places.  After acquiring fundamental knowledge about the history and basic conditions of Wudalianchi, the research team focused mainly on four dimensions: volcanic landforms, featured landscape, construction of scenic areas and tourism construction.

During the investigation, the representatives from PKU and the Wudalianchi Scenic Area Management Committee joint hand to hold a conference on geoscience research. With the presence of representatives from Wudalianchi Scenic Spot Administration Bureau, Education Bureau, Weifang Bureau, Tourism Bureau, Research Management Center, the conference aims at deepening the understanding of  history and current situation of Wudalianchi and discussing the bottleneck encountered during the development of Wudalianchi. In the end, the research team and the leaders of Wudalianchi units exchanged in-depth ideas and opinions on the development issues and prospects of Wudalianchi.

On March 3, members of the research team and instructors from PKU held a seminar in the First Elementary School of Wudalianchi Scenic Area. They delivered mini lectures on the volcanic formation, eruption, and evolution of geomorphology to primary and secondary school students. It successfully brought the idea about the past and present of their hometowns to the students. After the seminar, members of the research team shared their learning experiences to the students.

The investigation group implemented “the Belt and Road”  initiative by researching on-site and integrating the special resources, such as combining local characteristics and special environments. The team strives to propose feasibility plans for The Wudalianchi Scenic Area, based on professional perspectives, marketing, tourism regulations, organizational structures, and feature sections. They hope to promote a sustainable and healthy development to tourism and local economy for the area.
