Mar 29, 2019
Peking University, Mar. 29, 2019: The World Meteorological Day is observed every year on March 23. This theme of this year is “The Sun, the Earth, and the Weather”. On March 22 and 23, Peking University’s School of Physics and National Meteorological Center (NMC) of China Meteorological Administration co-organized two events respectively at Peking University Hall and China Meteorological Administration, aiming to disseminate meteorological knowledge to PKU faculty members, students and the general public.

Teachers and volunteers at the event

The event on March 22 was held at Peking University, consisting of six sections including basic information, Q & A, games, awards, interesting meteorological knowledge, and equipment exhibition. All activities serve the same purpose of “awaken memories of the wandering Earth”. Being both educational and entertaining, the activities attracted many participants. Posters and videos were put on display to provide a deeper understanding of “The Sun, the Earth, and the Weather” to attendees. Shen Yun, an expert from NMC, and some teachers from the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (DAOS), School of Physic were invited to interact with participants.

In addition, a small meteorological observatory was opened to public, so participants are able to learn more about the advanced devices such as satellite antenna, laser radar, disdrometer, sunphotometer measurement, visibility meter, etc.

The second event took place in CMA on March 23, in conjunction with an exhibition co-hosted by DAOS and NMC. The event was well-received by both adults and adolescents, especially the adorable “little dragon man” doll that caught attention from a large number of kids.
