Dec 23, 2019
Peking University, Dec. 23, 2019: To bid farewell to 2019 and embrace the coming 2020, the annual Peking University International Students and Foreign Experts New Year’s Party was held on December 19. More than 350 guests, including top leaders from Peking University, foreign experts, international students and foreign alumni, were present.

In his speech, PKU Vice President Tian Gang extended best New Year wishes to all members of the university as well as friends supporting the university’s development. Being the 100th anniversary of the May 4th Movement in 1919 and the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, 2019 witnessed the long way PKU had gone in its endeavors to be listed among top world-class universities with distinctive Chinese features. PKU has outpaced many other Chinese universities in different aspects, including the number of newly-elected academicians and major projects supported by the National Social Science Fund. Tian also touched upon PKU’s Global Excellence Strategy which was published in May this year, saying that the strategy aims at providing broader yet deeper platforms for educational cooperation and openning-up. In the approaching 2020, Tian said, PKU will keep striving for a brighter future.

Another significant highlight of the event was the recognition of 41 PKU international students from 34 countries who participated in China’s National Day parade held on October 1. These international students were all awarded certificate of honor for their outstanding performance in the celebration of China’s 70th founding anniversary. Also awarded were students who gave impressive performance and delicacies during PKU International Cultural Festival 2019. It was their endeavors that portrayed a colorful picture of cultural diversity to PKU students. After that, Tian Gang, Professor Donald Stone from the School of Foreign Languages, representatives of international alumni and students, mounted the stage to cut the cake in the hope of a prosperous new year.

The skillful Malaysian Diabolo show and the fantastic magic show given by students from China and Korea won bursts of cheers and applause. Beside these performances, PKU has offered guests a delicate buffet with various kinds of food with different cultural tints, which, together with the lucky draws, added excitement to the heated atmosphere.
