PKU Library Holds Exhibition of New Culture Movement Leaders' Letters

Peking University, Beijing, May 21st, 2009: Dozens of letters between New Culture Movement leader Hu Shi and Chen Duxiu, Liang Chi-chao, and Xu Zhimo, were shown for the first time in a 3-day exhibition in Peking University Library from May 20th.

 

This exhibition includes 13 letters (27 pages) from Chen Duxiu, 4 drafts(12 pages) and 7 letters (22 pages)from Liang Qichao, 3 letters (9 pages) from Xu Zhimo, which had been collected by Hu Shi's family. Many unknown stories and facts related to Hu Shi and Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, Xu Zhimo and others were mentioned in the letters. For example, the letters from Chen Duxiu involved the establishment of independent newspaper "New Youth" in 1920, the breakdown of "New Youth" editorial colleagues in 1920, demonstrations and strikes of students in Shanghai in 1920, the participation of Hu Shi in the Aftermath Solution Meeting of Duan Qirui's government, and the publication of  Chen Duxiu's drafts written in prison and so on.

 

This letter would be presented in the preview exhibition of China Jiade Spring Auction (2009) next week and be auctioned in the Ancient Books Special.
