An orthopedist, a centenarian, a legend

Peking University, Jan. 28, 2014: After years of hardworking in Peking University (PKU) People’s Hospital, Professor Feng Chuanhan, still healthy and energetic, met his 100th birthday.

 

At the centennial on January 26, his colleagues, successors and students from the Hospital went and celebrated Feng’s birthday with his family. The centenarian is well-known as their forerunner in orthopedics and education, and has made outstanding contribution to the development of orthopedics in China.

Feng, born in Guangdong province in 1914, has a life full of experience. He was enrolled in the Premedical Program of Yenching University in 1932 and got his bachelor degree as an “outstanding student” in 1936. He got his Ph.D. granted by the State University of New York at Beijing Union Hospital in 1940, and worked there. During the World War II broke, he transferred to Zhonghe Hospital, the predecessor of which he stayed in ever since.

 

In 1949, the young orthopedist, funded by the Royal Society of Surgery, studied in UK. In 1952, he joined the surgery team for the Korean War in Beijing.

 

He was once vice president of PKU People’s Hospital in 1961, and president from 1978 to 1981.

 

In his 80-year career in medicine, Feng’s contributions have influenced many fields like bone cancer, bone tuberculosis, and shoulder surgery. He founded the first laboratory of bone tumor and bone disease in China, pushing the research of bone into the cell level.

 

The professor is as well a pioneer for China’s bone science in international academic exchange. In 1982, he was invited to make keynote speak in the 49th ceremony of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and was awarded honorary membership.

 

Furthermore, Professor Feng is an educator enjoying a high reputation. His students now spread in all the branches in orthopedics science, and have led the boom in these fields.

 

His many books about orthopedics have been the foundation materials of this discipline.
