Beida hepatology gains int'l. approval
Feb 22, 2014

Peking University, Jan. 28, 2014: The Hepatology Institute (HI) of Peking University (PKU) recently received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Acquiring the CAP Accreditation certificate on December 13, 2013, HI became not only PKU’s first laboratory–but also the first among its hepatology colleagues in China–with such an honor.

The CAP Accreditation, firstly popularized in the US since 1962, was then recognized internationally in 1994 as the most suitable quality control standard for clinical laboratories. In the eyes of professional institutions across the globe, a CAP-accredited laboratory would have world-class inspection capability and quality management level.

Founded in 1981 by Professor Tao Qimin, HI has grown to be a comprehensive research entity including the Laboratory of Hepatitis Virus Immunization, the Laboratory of HIV Antibody Screening, and the Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology. To inspect hepatitis (A/B/C/E), flu and HIV, it utilizes nuclear acid quantification, serological marker detection, virus genotyping, resistance test and other techniques.

HI was among the first batch in 2002 that got the certificate of clinical gene amplification laboratory technique from China’s Ministry of Health. It has acted since 2006 as the central laboratory of the HCV Research, which is funded by the National Science and Technology Major Project.

HI became a Quintiles Laboratory in 2006. Since 2013, the Institute has been cooperating with Covance and other international central laboratories.

HI’s application process for the CAP Accreditation started in July 2012, when 492 detection regulations were set up and 189 modified to improve the biosafety and ergonomic standards. Meanwhile, the Institute has completed CAP’s 14 hepatology projects, which was spoken highly of by Professor C. Robert Baisden, the College’s evaluation expert.
