Mar 13, 2014

Peking University, Mar. 11, 2014: On February 21, the Second National University Commonweal Forum took place at Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center, Peking University.

The forum, hosted by China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and co-hosted by PKU Office of Student Financial Aid, was centered on two topics – “young people and public welfare” and “the cooperation in commonweal between enterprises and universities.”

During this assembly, delegates from enterprises, foundations and universities provided their insights on the development and cooperation of university commonweal organizations.

Nowadays, university students are getting more active in participating and organizing public interest activities. Some of these public-spirited students even consider public welfare undertaking as their future career.

In order to bolster this trend, the First National University Commonweal Forum initiated the “Future of Commonweal” project, with the aim of allocating social resources to support charity organizations in universities and cultivate a group of ambitious, charitable and capable young people.

During the discussion session, a core member of PKU Student Service Corps shared their charity experiences, noting that Peking University had not only sponsored students in commonweal activities, but also inspired them in terms of innovative service notions. She advocated more students’ involvement in charity practices.

According to Chen Hongtao, the vice secretary for China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, “Future of Commonweal” project, since its initiation, has received more and more support and recognition from society and universities. It is foreseeable that, channeled by this project, more enterprises and organizations will support university-rooted public service activities in the future. The newly established projects include fields such as environment, sports, financial management, etc.

After the forum, Chen Hongtao together with Yang Aiming, the director of PKU Office of Student Financial Aid, further explained the future tasks of university funds, the development of Student Service Corps and the advancement of commonweal projects.
