Latest Research Findings on Surface Plasmon Polariton Published in Physical Review Letters

Peking University, Beijing, Sept. 20, 2010: On Sept. 14, findings of latest research on confined three-dimensional plasmon modes inside a ring-shaped nanocavity, led by Prof. Yu Dapeng and Prof. Zhang Jiaseng and participated by a PhD student Zhu Xinli, were published in the online edition of Physical Review Letters .

 

In their letter, they investigate the plasmonic modes of a boxing ring-shaped nanocavity on the silver film. They used electron beam to excite surface plasmon polaritons (SSPs) in a nanocavity and got clear plasmonic modes with which results they further investigated their physical forming mechanism and found out that the electron beam locally excited the out-of-plane field component of SPPs, while the observed plasmonic modes corresponded to the modes of the out-of-plane field component.

 

These findings are significant to research on the excitation mechanism of SPPs and modes inside a nanocavity. They also experimented on the regular patterns of influence caused by the height of the metal reflectors to the plasmonic modes, which provided a new way for the control of characteristics of a resonant nanocavity. Because of the use of metal reflectors, the total size of the cavity is small with many plasmonic resonant modes. Numerous applications, such as plasmonic filter, nanolaser, and efficient light-emitting devices, can be expected to arise from these developments.
