Gou Zhongwen: The Choice of China’s Path

Peking University, Oct. 15,2015: On October 12,2015, Guo Zhongwen, member of the Standing Committee of Municipal Committee and secretary of Faculty Committee, gave a lecture on the choice of China’s Path to students in Peking University.
Gou Zhongwen began with a summary of the general feature of modern Chinese history: shots of history are blury, historical figures changing and relationships complicated. He encouraged students to see history from comprehensive and dialectical perspectives.

The lecture dilated upon the history from the Opium War in 1840 to the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Gou pointed out that “anti-imperialism” and “anti-feudalism” form the substance of modern Chinese history. He compared China with capitalist superpowers like the Great Britain, concluding that Chinese capitalism was doomed to failure due to the states and the historical trajectory of modern China, which was a far cry from western countries.
Besides, Gou put emphasis on the history of people’s revolution and the KMT-CPC cooperation. He also gave a brief review of the propagation of Marxism in China, paying tribute to the spirit of May Fourth Movement, which was also highlighted by President Xi during Xi’s visit to Peking University last year.

Before the lecture, Gou had a brief talk with Song Gao, vice president of Peking University. They exchanged ideas on the politic-educating course’s innovation, the China path and constructions about Marxism Center in Chinese style. In addition, Gou visited the works of First Congress of Marxism exhibition and debriefed associated personnel on the congress. Gou delivered his wishes for the leading role Peking University will play in constructing college’s spirit and the brighter future of Marxism development both in China and all round the world.
