70th Anniversary of PKU’s Oriental Studies Department

Peking University, May 29, 2016: On May 20, the celebration of the 70th anniversary of PKU’s Oriental Studies Department was held in Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center. The president of PKU Lin Jianhua attended the celebration.

 


The Venue

In his opening remarks, President Lin Jianhua spoke highly of the achievement of PKU’s Oriental Studies during the past 70 years and pointed out that PKU students should not only understand the oriental culture but also the occidental culture. He hoped that in future the Oriental Studies Department could make greater contribution to China’s development.

Former dean of the Oriental Studies Department, the president of the Oriental Studies Institute Wang Bangwei said in his speech that it was quite inspiring that the Oriental Studies Department had developed steadily in the past 70 years despite the changes of other departments in PKU. He expressed sincere gratitude for the contribution made by oriental study scholars represented by Mr Ji Xianlin.

1990 Hindi major graduate, the Deputy-Secretary-General of China Foundation for Peace and Development Ji Ping and other alumni also gave speeches. They recalled their life and study in PKU, expressed their gratitude for their Alma Mater and wished for the better future of the Oriental Studies Department.

At the end of the ceremony, the dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Professor Ning Qi expressed appreciation for all the attendees and those who had contributed to the establishment and development of Oriental Studies Department. He said the School of Foreign Languages will carry out more researches on Maritime Silk Route, overseas cultural exchange, national security as China increases communication with other countries. Students from the School of Foreign Languages recited poems in different languages, which was received with hearty rounds of applause.
