Chinese President Xi Jinping addresses a Forum on Philosophy and Social sciences
May 30, 2016
Peking University, May 19, 2016:On May 17, Chinese President Xi Jinping chaired and addressed a Forum on Philosophy and Social sciences. Some PKU professors and scholars also attended and delivered speeches at the forum. They introduced the latest development and achievement in the fields of philosophy and social sciences, and provided some constructive advice.

In his speech, Xi expressed his greeting to workers in the fields of philosophy and social sciences. He pointed out that philosophy and social sciences are irreplaceable in promoting the development of history and society. In order to communicate with the participants, he mainly talked about four points:

First, philosophy and social sciences must be valued. Chinese Communist Party has always attached importance to philosophy and social sciences since its birth for the critical role they played in the progress of human civilization.

In western history, many great thinkers of philosophy and the social sciences, such as Socrates and Plato, emerged as early as in the period of ancient Greece and Rome. During the Renaissance, Dante and other significant thinkers expressed their criticism and reflection upon philosophical and social issues. Later withthe bourgeois revolution sweeping Europe and America, new thoughts on philosophy and social sciences arose and exerted profound influence on the future direction of history and society.

Similarly in China, philosophy and social sciences contributed a lot to the development and flourish of Chinese civilization. From Confucianism, Taoism, to Buddhism, many ancient Chinese thinkers came on the scene with their own philosophical and sociological thoughts as well as effective methods for the ancient people to learn more about the world. Nowadays Chinese workers in the fields of philosophy and social sciences have also made lots of achievements. However, there are still numerous grave difficulties to overcome, thus more attention should be paid to philosophy and social sciences.

Second, Marxism must always occupy the guiding positionin the development of philosophy and social sciences. Xi said that upholdingthe guiding role of Marxism is the fundamental difference that distinguishes modern Chinese philosophy and social sciences from other philosophy and social sciences. Marxism is characterized by its emphasis on practice as it devotes to not only explaining the world, but also changing it. Hence, one of the leading tasks of Chinese philosophy and social sciences is to keep promoting the combination of Marxism and China’s actuality. It requires that the workers in the fields of philosophy and the social sciences should have a real understanding of Marxism.

Xi also pointed out that it is too arbitrary to say that Marxism is outdated as the recent international financial crisis is indeed a strong evidence for the innate conflict of capitalism. And he noticed that after the crisis many western scholars started to study Marxist political economy again and to reflect over the drawbacks of capitalism.

Third, the construction of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics must be advanced. The combination of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics should be presented in three aspects: successive and national character; original and epochal character; systematic and professional character. Under the guiding of Marxism, Chinese philosophy and social sciences should make the best of traditional Chinese culture resources as well as foreign excellent achievements to stimulate further development in this field.

Fourth, the leadership of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the fields of philosophy and social sciences must be strengthened and improved. Xi said that CCP views philosophy and social sciences as one of its significant businesses. It is the fundamental guarantee forthe further development of Chinese philosophy and the social sciences to uphold and improve the Party’s leadership.

Xi also required that every member of CCP should respect labor, knowledge, and the intellectual. And moreover officials should treat philosophy and social sciences in a scientific way. It is important to show respect for the sacrifice and achievement of the workers in the fields of philosophy and social sciences. In addition, scholars shall always enjoy the right to express freely different academic opinions so as to insist onthe academic freedom and democracy.

At the end of his speech,Xi called on the workers in the fields of philosophy and social sciences toforge ahead and make more contribution to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
