Peking University, June 7: On May 13, the three-day International Forum on Sino-European Building Archaeology was convened in Peking University. This forum received great support from Peking University Humanities Advanced Visiting Scholars Funds. Around 500 scholars and professional staffs attended this conference.
Participants exchanged the newest explorations on building archaeology and discussed the related research theories and methods. At the forum, a new book the imported and the Native, mainly talking on Catholicism Buildings in recent China, was jointly released by Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Peking University. Archaeology Research on Wanrong Jiwang Temple was also launched to the public.
Professor Sun Qingwei, deputy dean of School of Archaeology and Museology, hosted the opening ceremony on May 13. Li Yansong, vice president of Peking University and Michel Malherbe, Belgium Ambassador to China delivered the welcoming speech. Then, Hang Kan, dean of School of Archaeology and Museology and Krista de Jonge, director of department of architecture in Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Engineering College, respectively made a brief review of teaching activities, research history and achievements on Building Archaeology of their own university.
The opening ceremony of International Forum on Sino-European Building Archaeology
The main forum lasted for three days, including 11 lectures and discussions, and published 37 papers. In the meantime, 32 papers were published on the four youth forums. Archaeologists of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven were invited to make detailed introduction on the European scholars’ achievements on architectural sites excavations, protection and presentation at the sub-forum held by Chinese Architecture Design Institute.
Main forum
This forum promoted the exchange of the theory, method and practice of Building Archaeology among Chinese and overseas scholars. They all agree that Building Archaeology is different from Archaeology and Architecture History, but an intersection of both. Wherever the existing buildings or relics belong, scholars all need to do a systematic research on their historical and cultural value for better repair and protection.
