Third Annual Sino-U.S. Media Forum held at PKU

Peking University, June 29, 2016: On June 18, 2016, the third Annual Sino-U.S. Media Forum — “Politics, economics and diplomacy through media dialogue” — was successfully held at Peking University. The forum was jointly hosted by Peking University and University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. It was co-organized by the Global Times Foundation. 
 

Opening ceremony
 
This Forum was divided into two parts with an open-door forum in the morning and closed-door roundtable presentations and discussion in the afternoon. Dr. HE Shu, PKU associate professor and the forum organizer, introduced the forum's speakers. Opening remarks were delivered by Mr. GONG Wenxiang, former executive dean of School of Journalism and Communication, PKU; Mr. WU Jie, vice editor-in-chief of Global Times and honorary president of Global Times Foundation; and Dr. Denise Konan, dean of the College of Social Sciences, professor of the Department of Economics, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. Dr. LIU Yutong, secretary-general of China Diplomacy Association, who was representing Association President LI Zhaoxing, delivered a congratulation speech. Speakers all expressed their support for the forum as well as its significance in promoting mutual understanding and laying a solid foundation for the mutual trust and communication between U.S. and Chinese media.

Chairman of the Beijing Journalists Association, Mr. MEI Ninghua, delivered a keynote speech themed by “Media's Role in Building a New Model of Major-country Relationship between China and the United States”. During his speech, MEI emphasized, “on the process of constructing Sino-US relations, media and journalism remain vital, since most mutual understandings and recognitions between Chinese and American people are obtained through media. Due to this fact, media in these two countries should respect each other, treat each other equally, seek common ground while reserving differences in order to maintain a healthy Sino-US relationship.”

Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng,
Director of Community Outreach and Global Learning for the Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at UHM, also U.S. President Barack Obama’s sister, in her keynote speech titled “Building Bridges between us” encouraged the two countries to focus on peace education by building bridges between the U.S. and China.

CCTV News Dialogue host Mr. YANG Rui hosted a heated discussion on “Are Sino-U.S. trade and economic ties still stable support for China-U.S. relations?” and “Sino-U.S. relations & geopolitics in Asian Pacific” region in the morning interview session with experts and scholars from both China and the United States. During the roundtable presentations and discussions in the afternoon closed-door meetings, experts, scholars, journalists and student representatives shared research and discussed topics onPeace and Media Education,” and “Media’s impact on policymaking in China and the U.S.

Dr. Maya Soetoro on Topic 3: Peace and Media Education

During the roundtable, Dr. Ann Auman, professor and chair of the School of Communications from University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, focused on global media ethics, pointing out that both China and America are global powers and should hold greater and wider responsibility. Both should focus on what we have in common in terms of our approaches to media ethics, and not just on differences.

Prof. SHI Zengzhi from School of Journalism and Communication, Peking University, took the perspective of “socialized media in China” to analyze how new media help launch public policy. She mentioned “empowerment and anti-empowerment of new media” and pointed out that social network of new media is capable of forming a new sort of power. Individual autonomy can never be replaced by overall structure. Communities, organizations, individuals and policymakers, all own the unshakable responsibility for the speech autonomy.

Forum participants included: Vice Dean Prof. YU Hong and Vice Dean Prof. WU Jing, School of Journalism and Communication, PKU, Dr. Douglas Paal, vice president of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Mr. Robert Kapp, former president of the United States-China Business Council, and Mr. LIU Yawei, director of the China Program of Carter Center. Also participating were scholars and specialists from Peking University, Renmin University of China and University of Hawai'i at Mānoa and media professionals from Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, CCTV, China Daily, Global Times, Radio Beijing, New York Times, Financial Times, and Reuters News. Academics and media professionals attached great importance to this forum, spoke proactively and frankly, and interacted heatedly and pragmatically while sharing feedback from the sessions on Sino-U.S. relations.
 
The working language of this forum is English. The initiator of this forum, Dr. HE Shu said she sincerely hoped that the forum would continue to grow in influence and be a platform for improving communication between Chinese and foreign media. For future forums, she plans to invite experts and scholars in fields related to transnational issues with the goal of promoting learning and mutual understanding. At the same time, she expressed her best wishes for a successful future forum in Hawai'i.

3rd Annual Sino-U.S. Media Forum
 
Founded in 2013, the Sino-U.S. Media Forum was launched as a high-level academic forum that has integrated scholars, experts and journalists in discussions on significant media issues. It has been jointly organized by Peking University School of Journalism and Communication and University of Hawai'i at Mānoa School of Communications. The Forum was held in Beijing in October 2013 and June 2016 and in Honolulu in July 2014. In 2016, PKU cooperated with Global Times Foundation to launch a forum that focusing on key issues in the media in politics, economics and diplomacy between China and America with the goal of improving understanding.
