Peking University, Sep. 19, 2016: According to the Royal Society of Canada September 7 press release, the College of Engineering (COE) alumnus Dr. Wang Quan (94’) from Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science, Peking University was elected as a new fellow to the Royal Canadian Academy of Sciences.
Founded in 1882, the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) is one of Canada's most important scientific organizations, comprising the Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences. The newly elected 89 Fellows have diverse backgrounds and disciplines. They have been elected by their peers in recognition of outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievement. Election to the academies of the Royal Society of Canada is the highest honor a scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences.
Dr. Wang, now a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Manitoba, studied at the Department of Mechanics, Peking University from 1988 to 1994 and gained master's and doctorate degrees, under the supervision of Prof. Wang Dajun. He has taught at the National University of Singapore, University of Florida in the United States, and the University of Manitoba, Canada. In April 2015, he was elected as a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
The RSC news said, “Quan Wang has invented, formalized, and applied accurate structural health monitoring and structural repair methods through his pioneering work in smart materials and wavelets. He solved the problem of how to monitor highly voluminous nanomaterials used in civil, mechanical, aerospace engineering applications, and solved this problem through the application of nonlocal continuum theory. His advances have also contributed to the use of smart materials to harvest energy from ambient vibration.”
The inauguration ceremony will be held on November 18 this year in the Canadian city of Kingston.
