Wang Dong’s paper published in top journal Diplomatic History
Nov 10, 2016
Peking University, Nov. 2, 2016:Recently, Wang Dong, associate professor of School of International Studies, published his paper “Grand Strategy, Power Politics, and China’s Policy toward the United States in the 1960s” in the advance access publication of Diplomatic History. This is the first time that a Chinese scholar publishes a paper as the sole author in Diplomatic History, a world-class journal in the field of diplomatic history research.

Wang employed a great deal of firsthand documents declassified by Chinese and American government recently. His paper challenged long-heldtheories about Sino-American relationship, such as balance of power, ideology clash and domestic politics, and emphasized the crucial role of power politics in explaining China’s diplomatic policy in the 1960s, especially its policy toward the U.S.

Wang’s paper gained high appraisal from ananonymous reviewer. One of the reviewers thought it” argues convincingly” and considered it to be the “cutting edge scholarship on China-US diplomatic history as well as history of the Cold War.” Another reviewer deemed it “arresting and intellectually stimulating” and having great value to both the research of Sino-American relations and that of other general areas in international relation theories.

Wang’s paper, as a significant breakthrough in Chinese scholars’ study in the field of humanities and social sciences, marks a further step of Chinese Scholars towards world-class research level.
