China’s First APP for Diagnosing and Treating Complicated Hepatopathy Came Online
May 12, 2017

Peking University, May 9, 2017: On the morning of May 3, the news conference for launching the online hepatopathy consultation APP was held in Beijing. This APP, launched by “Clinical Thinking in Treating Hepatopathy Training Camp” and co-developed by Peking University People's Hospital, Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University together with China Medical Tribune, marks a new stage of diagnosing and treating liver diseases. With the help of Internet, it will provide patients with free, convenient, and timely consultations as well as treating instructions and referral service.

Hepatopathy remains one of the major diseases threatening human health. In China, hepatopathy is marked by its wide impact and perniciousness. Hepatopathy is complicated and miscellaneous with no typical clinical changes, which makes it perplexing for clinical diagnosis. Therefore, providing patients with timely, effective and symptom-based diagnostic as well as therapeutic methods has become an urgent issue faced by hospitals worldwide.

In 2015, PKU People’s Hospital, PKU Institute of Hepatopathy, Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University and China Medical Tribune set up the “Clinical Thinking in Treating Hepatopathy Camp.” It adopts a “Step by step” case analysis paradigm and carries out nationwide events for sharing, discussion and analysis. Additionally, it also assists in enhancing clinicians’ professional skills and refining their treatment thinking.

The APP for Diagnosing and Treating Complicated Hepatopathy is an extension of “Clinical Thinking in Treating Hepatopathy Training Camp.” Many experts in this camp, including Wei Lai, director of PKU Institute of Hepatology Institute and Hou Jinlin, director of Nanfang Hospital Hepatology Center will engage in this APP consultation work. Furthermore, when necessary, consultations will also be carried out in collaboration with international pathology experts of hepatopathy.

According to Professor Hou, physicians and patients can register on this platform to present their cases. Once the cases are collected, they will be assessed at the back end and those that are rare and complicated will be handed over to experts in china, or to international specialists if necessary. In the meantime, by collecting corresponding clinical data, a database of complicated hepatopathy is established as a platform created for young physicians to study, collaborate and communicate with international experts.

Professor Wei then introduced that the APP has separate entrances for physicians and patients. The reported cases, if severe, can receive feedbacks within 24 hours; if not, 4 days will be the maximum waiting time.

Zhang Jun, vice president of PKU People's Hospital, attended the news conference. He sent his congratulations and expressed his expectation for the APP. Its release is significant not only because it responds to government’s call for promoting a hierarchical medical system and encouraging patients to seek treatments in local hospitals, but also because it helps call forth public attention to hepatopathy by popularizing medical knowledge. PKU People's Hospital enjoys a glorious history for its achievements in the field of hepatopathy prevention and treatment--the first Hepatitis B vaccine and the first serological and molecular biological diagnostic kit for hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus was produced here.

To accelerate the standardization of management in hepatopathy diagnosis and treatment, it is a requisite to improve the diagnostic and therapeutic quality in secondary and tertiary hospitals, to provide standardized trainings for local doctors, and to perform effective treatments and continual examinations of hepatopathy on the local level. On this account, the “Clinical Thinking in Treating Hepatopathy Training Camp” has carried out numerous contests and trainings of complicated hepatopathy throughout China, promoted the communication between national specialists and youth practitioners dealing with hepatopathy, cultivated many young liver specialists nationwide, and set up the cadre of specialists by interdisciplinary cooperation concerning liver diseases.

The two training camps held earlier has examined 48 complicated hepatopathy cases in total, with 150 participants from 131 hospitals, and benefitted over 4500 young hepatopathy doctors. Those young specialists will directly communicate with patients via the APP platform and proffer assistance in consultations for hepatopaths. By clearing up confusions, performing joint consultations, providing nearest referrals and standardized treatments, the APP can provide more direct services for local physicians and patients.
