Lifetime Achievement in Translation

Peking University, Dec. 3, 2010: The Translators Association of China (TAC) held the commendation meeting to confer translators the "Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation" and the title of "Senior Translator" on Dec. 2. Xu Yuanchong, a well-known translator and foreign literature expert, and professor of PKU School of Journalism and Communication, received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation.

 

TAC President Li Zhaoxing and the China International Publishing Group (CIPG) Director Zhou Mingwei congratulated and awarded certificates for the awardees. Guo Xiaoyong, executive vice president of TAC and CIPG, preside over the ceremony.

 

 

"The association hopes that the whole society will attach greater importance to translation and give more respects to translators' efforts and works by publicizing the outstanding and important contributions of the senior translators," said Li Zhaoxing. ”The excellent translation skills and noble characters of the senior translators would help the young translators orientate better.”

 

TAC established its "Lifetime Achievement Award" in Translation in 2006. It is the highest honor conferred to living translators who have outstanding academic achievements and widespread recognition. The goal of the award is to encourage Chinese translators and interpreters to follow the example of award recipients, carry forward their professional dedication by enhancing professional qualities, and make contributions to the field of translation. The other four translators conferred "Lifetime Achievement Award" were Sha Boli, Caoying, Tu'an, and Li Shijun. Academic deans in translation field, Ji Xianlin and Li Xianyi, received the award respectively in 2006 and 2009.

 

Prof. Xu Yuanchong was born in Nanchang in 1921 and attended National Southwest Associated University in 1938. Since 1941, he has carried out a lot of translation works. which have promoted better understanding between China and foreign countries. He put forward "Optimization Theory" which was inherited from many great scholars such as Yan Fu, Lu Xun, Guo Moruo, and Zhu Guangqian, making unique contributions to the Chinese literature translation theories.
