Peking University, November 14, 2017: On November 3, 2017, with the host of PKU School of Journalism and Communication and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) organized the international workshop on food safety risk communication and strategic communications. A delegation of foreign experts from EFSA, World Health Organization (WHO) and other organizations, experts from State Food and Drug Administration (CFDA), CFSA and universities conducted the discussion on food safety risk communication and strategic communications issues. Some domestic high school and university students also attended the workshop.
Lu Shaoyang, dean of PKU School of Journalism and Communication, and Chen Shaozhou, deputy director of CFDA, delivered speeches. Lu Shaoyang, in his speech, warmly welcomed guests and mentioned the importance of the workshop with the background of “Healthy China Strategy”. Chen Shaozhou briefly introduced the current Chinese government’s strict food safety rules and innovation of related systems to achieve “Healthy China 2030” and the 13th Five-year food safety plan, especially explained the importance of the communication between Chinese government and international organizations, and expressed great hopes for the success of the workshop.
Subsequently, the experts gave speeches on three topics: “Effective Risk Communication: Global Concern and Local Experiences", "How to Realize Effective Risk Communication" and "The Role of Traditional Media and Social Media in Risk Communication". In the free discussion session, participants discussed how the government effectively delivered food safety information and how to prevent spreading false information.
The discussion
The workshop finished successfully, and one of the foreign participants said that the workshop should be held every year, as the food safety risk communication requires international cooperation.
