Mar 30, 2018
Peking University, Mar. 20, 2018: On Mar. 15, PKU OMES (Office of Mentality Education for Students) invited Professor Zeng Guang, director of Tsinghua University Research Center for Positive Psychology, to give a lecture named “Positive Psychology and Positive Self”. This is one of the lectures of Students’ Mentality Development, a course set up by OMES.

Professor Zeng first introduced the three primary purposes of Psychology: to help human beings get rid of pain, to help human beings pursue happiness, and to cultivate talents. Accordingly, Professor Zeng came up with the question: what kind of people should real education cultivate? He listed positive psychology’s practice and research results in the field of education, including Tsinghua “6+2” Positive Education Framework and the “Sunshine Seed Lesson” of the affiliated primary school of Tsinghua University. Statistics showed that the attempt of applying positive psychology into education has gained impressive result.

Professor Zeng further explained the differences between growing mindset and fixed mindset. Experiments showed that when a child successfully complete certain tasks, praising him or her as “being studious” instead of “being smart” is more effective in cultivating his or her courage to facing future challenges. Children who are praised as “being studious” are more inclined to form growth mindset, in which they think they can deal with difficulties through their efforts, while children who are praised as “being smart” tend to form fixed mindset and are thus inclined to give in to challenges.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Zeng talked about the research results of neuroplasticity. He said the discovery of neuroplasticity give material evidence for growth mindset. After the lecture, students came onto the stage to communicate with Professor Zeng, and showed their enthusiasm about further studying psychology.

Set up by OMES, Students’ Mentality Development is a public elective course. The content of the course will be innovated continually in the future.
