Students of Mountaineering Association set off for Qomolangma

 Peking University, March. 31, 2018: On March 31, 2018, seven student members of Mountaineering Association and their teacher in charge set off to scale Mount Qomolangma, known as Mount Everest in the West. President Lin Jianhua and other faculty representatives saw them off at the South Gate of Peking University.

During the farewell, Lin gave each team member a red string bracelet symbolizing good luck and success in Chinese culture. He stressed the safety-first principle and encouraged team members to develop their personality during the mountaineering trip. This is not only a good opportunity for the students to accumulate life experience as individuals, but also for the university to demonstrate PKU spirit to the whole society, he said.

Before the farewell, PKU Mount Qomolangma Mountaineering Team had been making sufficient and professional preparation. They discussed primary tasks and matters worth noticing during the trip with faculty and student representatives based on previous preparation at the departure ceremony held on March 26.

At the departure ceremony, PKU alumni and the team’s chief commander Huang Nubo explained routes and schedule in detail. He emphasized the importance of following team discipline and command. He also asked team members to fully realize all kinds of potential danger during the climbing. Topping the summit was not the only goal, he said.

Coach Qian Junwei introduced the preparatory work and the team members. He showed much confidence in their training and thought the team was qualified for the climbing.

By demonstrating in practice the ambitious and fearless spirit of Mountaineering Association, the team wished to celebrate PKU’s 120-year anniversary, Student Captain Zhao Wanrong said. On behalf of team members, he also promised to follow PKU disciplines and keep safety principle as their top priority.
