Peking University, April 17, 2018: On April 10, 2018, the naming ceremony for the main Building of School of Journalism and Communication was held in Peking University. The building is named after William Mong Man-wai to honor the support and contribution of him and his son, David Mong Tak Yeung .
William Mong Man-wai is the founder of Shun Hing Group and the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund. Back to 1993, he donated 1 million dollars to Peking University and set up Mong Man Wai International Exchange Fund, which was the earliest exchange fund with the largest amount. In 2009, Mr. William Mong donated another 20 million yuan for the construction of the main building of School of Journalism and Communication. After he passed away, his son, Mr. David Mong, inherited the spirit for promoting education and public welfare, and carried forward the building project. The building was completed in 2014, and then served educators and students generation after generation.
Cao Xing, an undergraduate student of grade 2014, shared her valuable memories with the building on behalf of the first beneficiaries. She said that students of School of Journalism and Communication should always not only be grateful to philanthropists but also shoulder the responsibility of sticking to morality and justice .
Lu Shaoyang, dean of School of Journalism and Communication, thanked Mr. William Mong and his son for the donation to ameliorate the school conditions. It has incalculable importance on accelerating the development of disciplines and improving the level of teaching and research. Lu also said that PKU would always be dedicated to cultivating the high-quality talents to be leaders in the media field, and step up as a world first-class school for journalism and communication under the instruction of “Double First-Class” initiative plan .
In the ceremony, Lin Jianhua, president of Peking University, awarded the ‘Outstanding Education Contribution Award of Peking University’ to Mr. David Mong . He said that to name the building after Mr. William Mong would inscribe the names of those entrepreneurs with social responsibilities and contributions to education in the mind of students and later generations. He expressed the hope for Peking University to reach a higher level on the historical node of 120th anniversary and expectation for Mr. David Mong and Shun Hing Group to continue to support the development of Peking University and Chinese advanced education.
With the warm applause, Mr. David Mong and President Lin Jianhua touched the crystal ball and lit up the Mong Man Wai Building. After the ceremony, Mr. David Mong and his party visited the campus and the facilities in the building. He said that he would continue to support the construction of School of Journalism and Communication and Institute of New Structural Economics and continue the friendship between Shun Hing Group and Peking University.
