[120th Anniversary] Forum on China’s Engagement in International Cooperation held

Peking University, April 23, 2018: On the morning of April 17, 2018, “Enhancing Global Governance for Mutual Benefit and Win-Win Cooperation” – Forum on Review and Prospects of China’s Engagement in International Cooperation Since 1978 was inaugurated at School of International Studies (SIS), Peking University.

The Forum, co-sponsored by SIS, Peking University and the United Nations Association of China, was a major international academic exchange event held in celebration of the 120th anniversary of Peking University. In addition to the forum on 17th, the 2-day event also included the academic seminar on international organization theory and personnel training on 18th. About 200 government officials, scholars and representatives from embassies and international organizations jointly reviewed the history of China’s engagement in international cooperation since 1978 and discussed how China could play a responsible major role in global governance.


The opening ceremony


Lin Jianhua, president of Peking University, attended the opening ceremony. In his speech, he underlined the unique role that Peking University would play in terms of personnel training for international organization and global governance.

Wu Hailong, director of Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, starting with a recount of his own diplomatic career, introduced the history of China’s active engagement in international cooperation since 1978.

Ambassador Zhang Yue from Department of International Organizations and Conferences, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made a comprehensive review of China’s contribution to international multilateral cooperation.

Amina J. Mohammed, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations, sent a video message to congratulate the inauguration of the forum. She pointed out that Chinese government made great contributions to the world by not only reducing poverty but also putting forward Belt and Road Initiative.

After the opening ceremony, all the participants posed for a group photo. Then the keynote speech session began.

In the morning, participants gave keynote speeches on the topic of “Evolution of International Order and Achievements, Experiences and Challenges of China’s Engagement in International Cooperation.”


Wu Hongbo, president of China International Public Relations Association, believed that current international order was undergoing profound and complex changes. Developing countries were changing the global landscape and China was playing an increasingly important role in international affairs.

Jia Qingguo, dean of SIS, Peking University, brought a keynote speech titled “China Needs and Values International Cooperation Now More Than Ever.” He expounded on the challenges in China’s engagement in international cooperation and their solutions.

In the afternoon, participants gave keynote speeches on the topic of “Constructing a New Structure of Global Governance for Mutual Benefit and Win-Win Cooperation and the Role of China.”

At the end of the Forum, Zhang Dan and Jia Qingguo respectively gave concluding remarks and thanked the wonderful speeches made by participants.

In the Seminar, officials and scholars participated in in-depth discussions on two major topics – “New Thinking on Theoretical Research of International Organizations in Chinese Academia” and “Personnel Training for International Organizations: Policy, Practice and Teaching.”
