PKU’s 120th Anniversary Gala Concert held in New York

Peking University, May 19, 2018: On May 13th (EST), Peking University Education Foundation (USA) and Peking University Alumni Association of Greater New York co-hosted ‘Beyond Music’ PKU’s 120th Anniversary Gala Concert at Lincoln Center, New York. More than 1000 PKU overseas alumni attended this anniversary gala. The Chinese pianist Yin Chengzong, Peking University Chinese Orchestra and Student Art Troupe of Columbia University jointly contributed to this gala.

Mr. Xu Yongji and Mr. Wang Wenhua from the Education group of the Chinese Consulate General in New York, Dr. Zhao Xicheng and Ms. Zhao Xiaolan, Li Yuning (Secretary General of the education foundation of Peking University), Huang He (President of the Alumni Association of the Peking University, New York) attended this concert. This concert is hosted by Zhao Lin, president of the Educational Funding of Peking University (USA).

As the birthland of Chinese advanced music education, Peking University Chinese Orchestra could be trace to the term of President Cai Yuanpei. It aims at inheriting and developing Chinese music, corresponding well with ‘Integrity, Creativity and Futurity’, the theme of PKU’s 120th anniversary.

At this concert, PKU Chinese Orchestra not only conducted classical Chinese music ‘Melodies From The Night Fisherman’ and ‘The Butterfly Lovers’, but also cooperates with Mr. Yin Chengzong and Student Art Troupe of Columbia University, and performed ‘Hou Tu’,’the Yellow River’, ‘Marching on the Bright Road’ and ‘Song of New Year's Eve’, which combining the merits of Chinese and Western styles. The concert ended in the ensemble of ‘Good News from Beijing Spreads Borderland’ by Chinese and American youths. The concert was conducted by Professor Wang Fujian from Central Conservatory of Music, supervised by Yu Jieren from PKU, and directed by Yu Geren from Peking University Alumni Association of Greater New York.

Ending

The income of this concert will be donated to the Educational Funding of Peking University (USA). A new scholarship will be established in order to strengthen bilateral communication of Chinese and American students, and special financial support will be granted for Chinese students from low-income families.
