Conference on College Student Development and Employment held in Peking University

Peking University, June 2, 2018: “Conference on College Student Development and Employment: Reform and Innovation ” closed with an ending ceremony on May, 27th. The ceremony was attended by representatives from various industries, 34 scholars from various countries, more than 100 university students and teaching members and relevant officials of Peking University.

The Forum, which lasted for two days, was co-hosted by the Institute for Educational Economics, the School of Education and Employment Guide and Service Center of PKU. Themed on “reformation and innovation”, the forum was intended to promote a deeper understanding of the relevance between the quality of college education and graduates’ employment and to make improvements in college education and employment guide. 

Chen Baojian, vice president of PKU congratulated on and fully recognized the fruitful results generated by the meeting. Chen pointed out that by exploring ways to connect academic research and educational management with talents development, the forum has provided college students with practical guidance on self-improvement as prepration for a future job. As Chen put it, the forum, where domestic and foreign experts assembled, was a collison of thoughts and ideas on how to connect talents cultivation with employment and how to put theory into practice. Therefore, the meeting is of referential significance for PKU to realize its target of “seeking connotative development of China’s higher education in a new era and advancing the reform of university education as well as the innovation of the modes of talents cultivation.” And Chen ended his speech with three suggestions: “first of all, we should cling to the socialist orientation for running a school and produce socialist builders and successors; second, we should develop a high-quality and connotative cultivation system of talents to satisfy the increasing demands of education, especially on diversity and individuality in college education; Last but not least, we should optimize the allocation of educational resources by seeking innovations in the modes of talents cultivation and in ways to promote students’ personal development. ”

Bai Liming, vice director of the human resource department of Huawei Technologies Co., spoke on behalf the employers and introduced Huawei’s standards for talents selection as well as its strategy for personnel training. Bai said that Huawei puts premium on the value of talents and is more than willing to enhance cooperation with universities for cultivating high-level talents. “On the one hand, employers should recognize the importance of on-campus recruitment and seek to place the best talents in the most suitable positions; on the other hand, employers should strive for employee’s sustainable development and constant empowerment. What’s more, instead of training all our employees as leaders regardless of talents diversity, we adhere to the idea of ‘open structure and differential management’ in terms of personnel training. What we aim is to help ‘leaders of thought, leaders of strategy, technical experts and talents from cooperative corporations’ find their most suitable direction of development.”

Then Zhang Lixin, director of PKU Student Career Center  gave a keynote speech. She pointed out the quality of employment of university graduates and that of university employment guide service should be measured in terms of its contributions to social development. More specifically, it is measured by the number of talents cultivated for focus industries and regions in China’s strategic plan. According to Zhang, Peking University, taking into account the talents demands of China and of the world, focused on three fields when providing employment guide: grass-roots civil servants,national defense and military industry and international organizations.

“The pioneering work we’ve made on employment guide service has proved to be effective.” Zhang said.
