Peking University, June 8, 2018: On June 5, 2018, the unveiling ceremony of Peking University Ecological Research Center and Eco-discipline Development Forum were held in the Sunshine Hall of the Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center. Over 300 representatives from domestic and foreign universities and institutes attended the ceremony.
At the ceremony, Lin Jianhua, president of Peking University, stated in his speech that with remarkable achievements in the past 40 years since reform and opening up, China is facing many serious and complex ecological and environmental issues. To make a difference for the overall ecological environment calls for strong academic support. Lin said that Peking University bravely shouldered the mission to promote the development of Chinese ecology, and established the ecological research center by integrating the existing resources from different departments. Lin expressed his hope that the research center will focus on academic research and personnel training, and will stay committed to solving ecological problems in China.
Many representatives gave speeches and shared their thoughts. Academician Xu Zhihong, who has paid attention to the development of ecology and biodiversity conservation work in China, pointed out that ecological research not only involves biology, environmental science and other related disciplines, but also involves humanities, economics and other social fields, and it urgently needs to build up a diversified open disciplinary structure and research system. Rooting in Peking University’s comprehensive academic environment and learning from Chinese traditional philosophy, the research center will make great contributions for China and the whole world.
After the ceremony, the Ecological Research Center and Academic Degree Commission of the State Council jointly held Eco-discipline Development Forum. On the forum, ecologists from different universities introduced their disciplinary achievements and warmly discussed on issues from various perspectives.
