2018 ‘May Fourth’ Symphony Concert for PKU 120th Anniversary

Peking University, May 12th, 2018: In the evening of May 7th, the ‘May Fourth’ Symphony Concert was held in Peking University. Performed by China National Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Hu Yongyan, the concert attributed to the 120th anniversary of Peking University.

This was the 18th ‘May Fourth’ concert held at PKU Hall. As always, this annual concert gains huge support from PKU and many national symphony orchestras, and is highly hailed by students and faculties at PKU. This program also provids an opportunity for university students to learn about serious art and thus contributes to enriching PKU campus culture.

The repertoire of this concert were jointly selected by PKU and China National Symphony Orchestra. The first piece was Academic Festival Overture by Brahms, presenting hopeful and colorful university life. With a delightful and peaceful tune, Serenade for Strings in E major by Dvorák was performed next. In the second half, the national orchestra conducted one of Brahms’ most classical productions, Second Symphony. Finally, Slavonic Dance by Dvorák was presented as an encore, and the ‘May Fourth’ concert ended in enthusiastic applauses. During the concert, the brief repertoire introduction by Hu Yongyan, the conductor, helped the audiences understand the music better. This performance also served as a part of PKU’s 120th anniversary celebration activities.
