Alumnus Chai Yang elected to National Academy of Medicine

Peking University, Oct. 17, 2018: On October 15, Peking University alumnus, Ostrow Associate Dean of Research Chai Yang, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), a membership which is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.


Professor Chai Yang

Professor Chai Yang graduated from Department of Stomatology, Beijing Medical College (now Peking University School of Stomatology) in 1984. After working at the Department Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the university hospital for a period, Chai Yang went to the United States to further his study. Currently, Chai is the Associate Dean of Research and Director of the Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC as well as member of the review committees of several international funds such as National Institute of Health, Welcome Trust and Medical Research Council.


According to the NAM announcement, the distinction is meant to honor Chai’s “pioneering studies on the molecular regulation of cell types during craniofacial development, leading to novel bioengineered treatment strategies and new hope to patients suffering from debilitating and emotionally devastating malformations of the head and face.”


NAM is a US national academic institution that enjoys parallel reputation and status with the National Academy of Science (NAS) and the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). And it now has a total member of above 2000 academicians, including more than ten Nobel Prize winners.
