"Effective Responses to Population Aging" - the 6th PKU Interdisciplinary Frontier Forum Held

Peking University, Oct. 20, 2018: On October 16, 2018, “Effective Responses to the Population Aging” – the 6th Peking University Interdisciplinary Frontier Forum was held in the Sunshine Hall of the Yingjie Exchange Center. The Disciplinary Construction Office of Peking University hosted the forum. More  than 100 experts and scholars of related fields from Peking University, Renmin University of China, Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, Chinese Geriatric Society and Geriatrics Association, and National Rehabilitation Center of the Ministry of Civil Affairs attended the forum. The opening ceremony was hosted by Zhang Pingwen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Disciplinary Construction Office of Peking University.

In his speech, vice president of Peking University Wang Bo welcomed the arrival of the distinguished guests. He expressed his gratitude to members of the academic community for their support for Peking University. He pointed out that Peking University has the multidisciplinary advantage of a comprehensive university and is promising in promoting multi-disciplinary joint research surrounding the problem of population aging. In the early stage, with the support of the National Committee for Population Aging and the experts, Peking University organized a major project of multi-disciplinary research on population aging and achieved some initial results. The Frontier Forum on Interdisciplinary Population Aging is a concentrated demonstration of the research results of population aging, and also a useful exploration to promote effective interdisciplinary research on population aging.

On behalf of the National Committee for Population Aging, Zhu Yaoyin congratulated the forum and fully affirmed the positive role played by Peking University in previous population aging researches and policy consultation. He pointed out that it is necessary to study the rapidly spreading population aging problem from a global and strategic perspective, and attached great importance to the comprehensive and in-depth impact of population aging on China's economy and society. To deal with the problem of population aging effectively, we must implement comprehensive measures to improve the comprehensiveness, systematicness and coordination of the responses to population aging. At the same time, in-depth study of the problem of aging must break the boundaries of disciplines, and it requires resource coordination and joint research across multiple disciplines.

At the opening ceremony, Zhang Pingwen stressed that the challenges of population aging in China are increasing, and the aging and accompanying problems need to be solved through multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral coordination. He noted that this forum, held just before the Double Ninth Festival, hopes to feasibly promote the research and to find some answers to the problem of population aging. On behalf of the organizers, he thanked the distinguished guests and experts for their support of this forum.

The keynote speeches were hosted by Zheng Xiaoying, a member of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World  and director of the PKU Institute of Population Research. Famous experts and scholars from different fields gave wonderful speeches on relevant contents in various fields.

Yang Weizhong, secretary-general and vice president  of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, presented the report on the rapid aging of China and the serious health and social problems in the report entitled “Countermeasures and Reflections on Social Health Problems in an Aged Society.” Du Peng, vice president of China Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics and vice president of Renmin University of China, explained the changes in China's aging and gerontology research of the development trend of the elderly population, as well as the status quo of research on aging, research topics, trends, challenges and prospects. Fan Yubo, director of Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, gave a speech entitled “Assistive Devices and Elderly Care.” Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor of PKU School of Medicine Tong Tanjun gave a wonderful speech on the relationship between tumor and aging. Director of PKU School of Public Health Meng Qingyue gave a report entitled “Funding of Aged Health Services: International Experience and China's Countermeasures.” Chen Gong, Director of the Peking University Institute of Gerontology, gave a speech on “The Time Bank” as a third way to deal with population aging.

In the afternoon, the forum held three special seminars on the themes of “Elderly and Development,” “Promoting the Health and Well-being of the Elderly” and “Building a Supportive Environment for the Elderly.”

During the forum, experts and scholars from all walks of life gave reports on "Effective Responses to Population Aging" from different perspectives and conducted a full exchange and discussion. The participating scholars agreed that this forum provided a platform for multidisciplinary exchanges in population aging research, and hoped that this forum will be used as an opportunity to further the coordination and jointly promote future researches.
