PKU meets new Council Chairman Qiu Shuiping and President Hao Ping

Peking University, Oct. 23, 2018: On October 23, Qiu Shuiping, former president of the Shanxi Higher People’s Court, is appointed chairman of Peking University Council, succeeding Hao Ping, former council chairman and now president of Peking University. The appointment comes into immediate effect.

Qiu gained his bachelor’s degree in law at Peking University in 1983. After graduation, he taught at the Department of Law, Jiangxi University for two years. He returned to Peking University for further study and got his master’s degree in law in 1988. After that, he worked as faculty member and later secretary of Peking University Youth League Committee. He left Peking University and worked for the Beijing municipal system in 1996. He was first the assistant chief executive at Chaoyang District and later chief executive at Pinggu District. Before he started his career at the Shanxi Higher People’s Court in 2017, he had been a chief member of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee. Qiu is also a deputy of the 18th National People’s Congress.

Qiu delivers his inaugural after the appointment. He fully appraises the achievements Peking University has achieved in the past and says it has been a great pleasure to work at his alma mater again. He hopes that Peking University can seize the opportunities in the new era and grow into a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.

The appointment marks Qiu’s return to Peking University after an absence of more than 20 years.

Hao Ping, former chairman of Peking University Council, is appointed president of Peking University. His predecessor President Lin Jianhua has held the position for three years starting from February 2015 and leaves the position for retirement.

Hao studied and worked at Peking University from 1978 to 2005. He was first director of the Office of International Relations, later member of PKU Council and finally vice president of Peking University. He got his doctoral degree in international relations at PKU. In 2005, Hao left PKU and it was not until 2016 that he came back as chairman of PKU Council. Before that, Hao had been president of Beijing Foreign Studies University, the vice minister of Education and 
the director of the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO.

In his speech, Hao emphasizes the significance of the Double First-Class Initiative. He calls for PKU students and faculties to promote the spirits of “patriotism, progress, democracy, and science,” the essence of the May Fourth Movement, and make contributions to the rejuvenation of China.
