Oct 30, 2018
Peking University, Oct. 25, 2018: The 83rd Forum on Frontiers on Science & Technology was held in the Academic Hall of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on 22nd October, 2018, with the theme “Ecosystem Ecology.” Hosted by the Academic Divisions of the CAS, the forum was also co-organized by Peking University and other research institutions.

Fang Jingyun, academician from Peking University, Huang Yao, researcher of the Institute of Botany of the CAS, and Yu Guirui, researcher of the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of the CAS co-hosted the forum as the chairmen. More than 60 experts and 50 graduate students coming from 23 different universities and institutions participated in the forum.

Fang Jingyun giving the report

Fang Jingyun introduced the background of the forum and the attending experts following with 8 experts’ reports with respect to 8 themes. These reports summarized the disciplinary orientation of ecosystem ecology, ecosystem configuration, matter cycle and energy flow, biodiversity and ecosystem functions, and the impact of global change and human activities on ecosystems, and provided a detailed introduction of the new techniques and methods of ecosystem study and the networked experiment platform. These reports thoroughly discussed the cutting-edge scientific issues in the field of ecosystem ecology and greatly promoted the development of strategic research on ecosystem ecology.

The concept of the ecosystem was first proposed in 1936 and since then the study of ecosystem ecology had rapidly developed. Now, this subject not only remains a branch of natural sciences with strong attributes but also acts as an important theoretical basis for the sustainable development of human society.

The ecosystem research of our country had advanced at a high speed since the early 1980s after the reform and opening-up and we had made remarkable achievements and formed unique featured research in various aspects, including terrestrial carbon cycle, ecosystem services, and ecosystem restoration and management.

To promote our country’s development of ecosystem ecology and to discuss its developing trend and applications in the ecological civilization construction, this forum took “ecosystem ecology” as the core theme and faced the frontier issues in this field. Based on systematic summarization for the research status at home and abroad as well as the subject’s development history and research layout, this forum proposed the disciplinary development strategy in China and provided references for the development of ecosystem ecology and relevant disciplines in the next 10 to 20 years.
