Beijing Graphene Forum 2018 kicks off in Beijing

 Peking University, Nov. 9, 2018: On October 25, the Beijing Graphene Forum 2018 kicked off in Beijing, witnessing the founding of the Beijing Graphene Institute (BGI). Han Qide, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and vice chairperson of the 12th CPPCC National Committee, Qi Jing, member of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and director of Beijing United Front Work Department, Hao Ping, president of Peking University and Liu Zhongfan, CAS member and the newly appointed Dean of BGI attended the inauguration. The ceremony marks the beginning of a new era in the development of BGI and Graphene research in Beijing.

In his speech, President Hao said that as the international community is undergoing complicated changes, the competition among countries is increasingly reflected in technology and talents. Emerged in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, new technologies including artificial intelligence and big data, along with new materials represented by graphene, have brought profound revolution to the economy, livelihood and culture of our world. Therefore, BGI is founded for further the development of graphene research and a higher level of service for industries. Through active exploration towards new scientific research and technology transfer, BGI aims to accomplish the integration of academic research and industrial manufacture. Peking University actively facilitates the establishment of BGI. In the future, Peking University will continue to deepen reform, strengthen innovation and satisfy national demand.

BGI was initiated by Peking University and directly promoted by the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission. Located at the Science Park of Cui Hu, Zhongguancun, BGI is jointly funded by the municipal government, industry and social capital, hiring approximately 500 employees. The first Dean was assigned to academician Liu, a renowned expert in graphene research. BGI is committed to constructing the foundation of future graphene research and exploring an innovative mechanism integrating industry into academic research. BGI is determined to serve as the “aircraft carrier” of graphene industry with global competitiveness and sustainability.
