PKUHSC & McGill University Faculty of Medicine First Joint Symposium on Primary Health Care held

Peking University, Nov. 20, 2018: Peking University Health Science Center & McGill University Faculty of Medicine First Joint Symposium on Primary Health Care was held on November 20th. The theme was “Learning from Each Other: From Policy to Action: Strengthening Primary Health Care as the Foundation of Our Health System”. Around 100 Experts and scholars from World Bank, World Health Organization, and etc. attended this forum.

In this forum, experts and scholars from China and Canada analyzed the situation of primary health care in their countries from the aspect of international comparison, medical service, and the professional staff. Chen Kai, from Department of Primary Health  of National Health Commission, introduced China’s primary medical service system and its reform of compensation, human resource system, allocation system, etc. Howard Bergman, chair of Department of Family Medicine of McGill University , further pointed out that primary medical service was the foundation of our medical system. The center of medical services transferred from hospitals to primary medical centers.

The second part of this forum surrounded “The preference and choice of citizens towards primary medical service”. Researches showed that, although the primary medical service in China largely improved this year, citizens’ confidence had not been lifted yet. Compared with China, the family doctor system in Canada had been established for a long time.

As for the final part of the forum, experts and scholars talked about the way and barrier to establish the primary health service system, Qin Jiangmei, professor of China National Health Development Research Center (CNHDRC) , introduced the opportunities and challenges the primary medical service system in China facing and illustrated the importance of setting up the efficient medical service system, enhancing the construction of professional staff and improving services. Daniel Weinstock also pointed out that socio-economic environment of one country and its present medical system had large influence on the reform in the future. Eventually, experts and scholars achieved an agreement on the cooperation in the field of primary medical researches and practices between China and Canada.
