PKU student Fu Zixuan named as 2018 Rhodes scholar
Dec 10, 2018
Peking University, Dec. 3, 2018: After finishing the whole day’s work, Fu Zixuan took a glance of her mobile phone and found out that there were two missed calls. When she nervously called back, she received the exciting reply of “Congratulations”. Then she knew that she was successfully named as one of 2018 Rhodes scholars, which was hailed as the Nobel Prize for global undergraduates. Without any celebration, Fu fell asleep calmly at that night. However, after waking up the next day, she suddenly began to feel it was so incredible. “I was excited and also struck with awe. After all, the title of Rhodes scholar means a lot.”

Fu Zixuan

Love for journalism and society

Fu Zixuan, a senior student from Yuanpei College, Peking University, majored in economics and studied for a dual degree in international politics in School of International Studies at the same time. Her main research orientation was social equality and labor mobility, and she also worked on studies of medical insurance as a research assistant. Committed to journalism and communication, Fu was a journalist of PKU TV and did internships in many media agencies, participating in researches and news reporting. She studied communication as an exchange student in University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and got full grade points. Her tutor in UCLA praised her as one of the most excellent students. Additionally, Fu was a member of Peking University women’s basketball team and the director of PE department of Yuanpei College Students’ Union. She loved parachute jumping, hiking, and other extreme sports.

When it came to her secret of success, Fu believed that it was her love for journalism and society that moved the judges. “When someone really loves one thing and makes efforts for it, he or she will get enormous energy and lots of happiness.” She also thought that what an excellent journalist needed most was not skills of interviewing and writing, but an awareness of the public—the deep observation and rational thinking of society. Just as the sentence well known by Rhodes scholars goes, “Fight the world’s fight.”

Fu planned to learn Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) in Oxford University, hoping to explore deeper in the field of both philosophy and politics and use it as a start to realize her dream about journalism.

Freedom in Peking University

What Fu treasured most is her life in Peking University as an undergraduate. Asked about the most valuable aspect, she replied without any hesitation that it was the freedom to make choices.

“In Peking University, everybody has unlimited possibilities. It is in Peking University that I have found what my dream was. In the past four years, thanks to the inter-faculty elective course system in PKU and the liberal education provided by Yuanpei College, I have gained knowledge in economics, international politics, and journalism and communication, and have gradually formed my own knowledge structure. My undergraduate life in Peking University is a process of free exploration. During this period, magical ‘chemical reaction’ happens among different subjects. I believe this is exactly the so-called ‘charm of interdisciplinarity’.”

It is a postgraduate award supporting exceptional students from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. It aims to nurture public-spirited leaders for the world's future.
