Peking University, Dec. 14, 2018: On October, 26th, hosted by Center of Eastern Literature in Key Research Bases of Philosophy and Social Sciences, Ministry of Education, co-sponsored by Chinese Association of The Story of the Stone and Korean Association of The Story of the Stone, international academic seminar ‘The spread of The Story of the Stone in East Asia’ was held in the New Building of the School of Foreign Languages in Peking University. Present at the meeting were experts and scholars of The Story of the Stone and eminent doctoral students with relevant interests.

Wang Bangwei, director of Center of Eastern Literature, pointed out that communication between China and other East Asian cultures had been frequent in all ages, especially in the field of literary interactions; the four classical Chinese masterpieces, for example, had been actively translated and introduced to other countries. However, the spread of The Story of the Stone in East Asia received little scholarly attention in China. This seminar was an effective supplement to domestic studies of the development and dynamics of overseas Redology.

At the seminar

Professor Choi Yongcheol of Korea University, president of Korean Association of The Story of the Stone, remarked that this seminar was a rare learning opportunity for Korean scholars. The Story of the Stone had served as an amicitial bond for Korea and China and he expressed hope that this friendship would endure.

Professor Zhang Qingshan affirmed that the spread of The Story of the Stone in East Asia was a great research subject. Textual transmission and reception are both worth studying; cultural commonality is the recognition of common life. The Story of the Stone was a classic in both China and the whole world. The fact that the seminar was able to convoke experts and scholars from China and Korea attested to the bridging significance of The Story of the Stone in cultural communication between China and the Asian culture. He hoped that this seminar could promote academic interactions and enhance cross-national friendship as well.

During the seminar, a good many distinguished guests delivered speeches on their respective research fields. In the section of ‘The Spread and Impact of The Story of the Stone in Korea’, Choi Yongcheol presented his article ‘The Retrospect and Prospect of The Story of the Stone in Korea’, in which he surveyed the evolution of Korean Redology in the nineteenth century, and expressed his hope that Korean Redology could flourish in the future. Professor Han Hyekyung of the Catholic University of Korea, focused on the future of pedagogical explorations based on this novel. Professor Song Jinyeong, the University of Suwon, demonstrated the development of Korean Redology from retranslation to embellishment and then to self-translation. Doctor Wang Feiyan of Korea University and Doctor Zhu Yu of Korea University both analyzed cultural disparity in different versions of Korean renderings of the novel.

In the section of ‘The Spread and Impact of The Story of the Stone in Mongolia’, Professor Er Quibayal, vice president of Inner Mongolia University, confirmed Hasbor’s academic contribution and put forward some reflections on current research on Hasbor. Professor Sarina from Beijing Normal University took the Zosoto area in Inner Mongolia as an example of interlingual reading of The Story of the Stone and remarked that ideological and stylistic awareness of Chinese ‘novel’ prompted ethnic writers to innovate within national literary writing.

In the section of ‘The Spread and Impact of The Story of the Stone in Japan’, Professor Weng Jiahui of Peking University pointed out that the Japanese writers were under great influence of The Story of the Stone, which inspired a great range of Japanese literary imageries and motifs such as symbolic use of the mirror.

Present at the seminar were also a constellation of cultural celebrities and Redological scholars, most of whom are presidents of the Chinese Association of The Story of the Stone, including Professor Zhao Jianzhong, Professor Chen Ganglong, Professor Sun Weike, Professor Duan Jiangli, Professor Cao Libo, etc.
