Peking University, Jan. 2, 2014: On December 23 , 2013, the White House of the United States named the 102 researchers as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for 2013, among them stand PKU alumni Wu Junqiao and Han Xue, nominated by National Science Foundation and the Department of Health and Human Services.

The awards is the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. The winners will receive their awards at a Washington, DC, ceremony in 2014.

Dr. Junqiao Wu is currently  associate professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of California, Berkeley (http://www.mse.berkeley.edu/~jwu/). He also holds appointments in the Berkeley Nanoscience and Nanoengineering Institute and the Applied Science and Technology Graduate Program at U. C. Berkeley, and the Materials Sciences Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. With his research interests on semiconductors and nanomaterials science and technology, Professor Wu explores novel properties and applications of strongly correlated electron materials with reduced dimensions, phase transitions at the nanometer scale, and thermoelectrics and photovoltaics of semiconductor films, nanostructures, interfaces and composites.

Dr. Han Xue is an assistant professor at Biomedical Engineering Department, Boston University, where she leads a neuroengineering lab (the Han Lab http://www.bu.edu/hanlab/) to discover design principles for novel neuromodulation therapies. Her research interests are neurotechnology, optical neural modulation, optogenetics, neural prosthetics, neural network dynamics, brain rhythms, neurological and psychiatric diseases, cognition.

The awards, established by President Clinton in 1996, are coordinated by the Office of Science and Technology Policy within the Executive Office of the President. Awardees are selected for their pursuit of innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology and their commitment to community service as demonstrated through scientific leadership, public education, or community outreach.
