Peking University, Beijing, Nov 30: The 2009-10 Peking University-Lhasa Middle School (LMS) Awarding Ceremony of Zhang Foundation-Xiaoling Grant was held on Nov 24 in Lhasa, capital city of Tibet Autonomous Region.
The ceremony was co-organized by Lhasa Middle School and PKU’s volunteer team of graduate students for education aid. 200 outstanding students from the school were awarded both the Xiaoling grant and learning materials in the Tibetan language.

Lv Yuanye, head of the 11th PKU volunteer team of graduate students for education aid, recalled the process of this project from pre-research, formal establishment to annual delivery, starting from the 7th volunteer team two years ago, before his announcing the award list.
The awardees of the grant were all from the Hongzhi Class, a special group of outstanding students with financial or other difficulties.
Principal of LMS, Tang Zehui, expressed his gratitude to Ms. Xu Xiaoling, Peking University Education Foundation and the volunteer teachers for their contributions, and encouraged the awardees to work harder to better serve their homeland and the society in return.
"Doing the best, not considering rewards, helping others and serving the society," remarked Liu Chuanlei, Vice-director of Rights and Interests Department, the Chinese Communist Youth League Tibet Autonomous Region Committee. He hoped that the awardees would follow their role models from PKU as well as their mottos, in promoting the spirit of voluntary service.
Tenzin Ngodrup, one of the awardees, vowed to work hard for a better Tibet, in his speech as a tribute to the funding.

Since 2001, Lhasa Middle School has received 23 volunteer teachers from Peking University for the program of volunteer team of graduate students for education aid. Each one of them has been deeply moved by the care from local people and the hardships of China’s western areas. Besides daily teaching and administrative work, PKU volunteers during the past nine years have also participated social investigations on the educational and social issues of Tibet, making their contributions to the development of the region.
The grant is funded by PKU alumna Ms. Xu Xiaoling who is living in the US now. This year’s Zhang Foundation-Xiaoling Grant benefits 119 students from Grade 1 and 2 of the senior middle school, covering the board, learning materials, necessary expenses in emergency and other fees. Since 2007, it has awarded 232 students of the Hongzhi Class, with a total amount of US$ 9,000.
