Peking University, Beijing, Dec 14, 2009: On Dec 1, 2009, China Disabled Persons’ Federation (CDPF) and China Foundation for Disabled Persons held a press conference to release the 2009 Monitoring Report of the Status and Progress toward Well-off Life of the Disabled in China. The press conference was attended and covered by over 30 media including Xinhua News Agency and People’s Daily.

The monitoring report was based on the monitoring result of the status of the disabled people in China. The Research office of CDPF, the Institute of Population Research, PKU and the Research Institute of Statistical Sciences of National Bureau of Statistics were in charge of the monitoring, data analysis and report composition. Chen Gong, Executive Vice Director of PKU Institute of Population Research attended the press conference on behalf of the Institute and PKU Development Research Center for Disabled Persons, answered questions raised by the media and illustrated the data change and development of the welfare of the disabled.

It’s been the third year of follow-up monitoring survey since 2007. The monitoring of this year lasted from April 1, 2008 to April 1 to 2009, covering 1467 survey communities in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government, including 34866 samples. After monitoring 17 indicators of 3 categories concerning the existence, development and environment of the disabled, it has found that 53.5% of the disabled people in China have realized comprehensive well-off life, a 3% increases compared to that in last year. The overall living conditions of the disabled have continued to improve and so have all the social services for the disabled. However, the disabled people still have difficulties in areas such as medical treatment, rehabilitation, education, employment and social participation and so on. The annual monitoring and analysis report on the status and progress toward well-off life of the disabled has provided convincing and substantial data and pertinent advice, to promote the policy-making and the improvement of social cause for the disabled in China.
