[Centenary of the May Fourth Movement] The Centennial Exhibition of the May Fourth Movement opens

Peking University, April 30, 2019: On the morning of April 25, 2019, “the Centennial Exhibition of the May Fourth Movement" opened in the Museum of Peking University History. It is the first special exhibition held in the refurbished museum. PKU Council Chair Qiu Shuiping and PKU President Hao Ping cut the ribbon at the open exhibition. Other honored guests were present at the ceremony.

This exhibition is divided into three parts: background, outbreak, and development. On display there are more than 70 precious pictures and 100 manuscripts, publications, academic works, badges and other substantial materials of the May Fourth Movement, which systematically demonstrate the significant historical role Peking University played in the May Fourth Patriotic Movement and the New Cultural Movement, as well as the blossoming ideological and academic development during that period. The exhibition highlights the historical significance of the main founders of the Communist Party of China coming in contact with Marxism and promoting the establishment of the Communist Party of China when working or studying at Peking University.

Qiu spoke highly of the historical significance and far-reaching influence of the May Fourth Movement and pointed out that in the past 100 years, the May Fourth Movement spirit had been deeply integrated into the historical development and cultural basis of Peking University. He stressed that the May Fourth Movement as a great patriotic movement promoted ideological emancipation and the in-depth development of the New Culture Movement, thus laid the foundation for the widespread of Marxism in China; it marked the beginning of the new democratic revolution in China and made ideological and organizational contributions to the establishment of the Communist Party of China. Bearing "Patriotism, Development, Democracy and Science" in mind, generations of Peking University integrated their patriotic spirit into the great cause of realizing the Chinese dream.

Qiu also recalled Xi’s profound interpretation of the May Fourth Movement Spirit and encouraged the youth in the new era to shoulder the historic task of "uniting and revitalizing China" in the realization of the Chinese Dream.

Ma Jianjun, director of the museum, introduced the characteristics of the exhibition and the renovation of the museum. Highlighting PKU impress on this historical event, the exhibition makes full use of the special collections and historical materials of the museum. The refurbishment of the museum takes "Smart Museum " as its general objective, and insists on ideological quality, academic nature, professionalism, internationalization, and sustainable development.

After the opening ceremony, Qiu Shuiping, Hao Ping and representatives of teachers and students visited the exhibition to review the history of the May Fourth Movement.
