[Centenary of the May Fourth Movement] Peking University holds a running activity

Peking University, May 7, 2019: To commemorate the centenary of the May Fourth Movement and the 121st founding anniversary of Peking University, a running activity was held, with 5,400 students and teachers running 5.4 kilometers from Wu-si Stadium to Old Summer Palace (aka. Yuanmingyuan Park). 

 
Peking University Council Chair Qiu Shuiping, Vice President of Peking University Wang Bo, Vice President of Peking University Chen Baojian and other school leaders attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Peking University Vice Council Chair An Yufeng. An said that, “One hundred years ago, the patriotic students from Peking University opened a magnificent chapter of the May Fourth Movement. During that turbulent era, the advanced intellectuals from Peking University explored a road for saving the country, awakened the nation and opened a new era.”

Wang gave the welcome speech, saying that the running activity is a symbol of dream catchers. Over the past 100 years, the generations of Peking University have passed on the spirit of patriotism, progress, democracy and science to us. Wang also wished that all students and teachers can seek joy in exercising and strengthening their physical conditions.

Hu Yakun, a postgraduate from Institute of Population, said “It is spectacular to witness 5,400 people run together, because they represent a vigorous and energetic generation.” Her teammate, Li Jun, expressed her excitement, saying that she strongly felt the vitality of youth when running and deeply appreciated the excellent work of all the volunteers.


Chen Fangzhen, a guide of the 7th procession, said “When I knew that I was fortunate to be selected as a running guide, I felt extremely nervous and excited.” There were many teachers and students like Chen Fangzhen who participated in the activities as volunteers. Many of them participated in preparing this event as early as two or three weeks ago. Before the event, they had to get familiar with the stadium and running route to ensure everything can proceed smoothly.
