Geology Department of Peking University celebrates its 110th founding anniversary

Peking University, May 13, 2019: Geology Department of Peking University (PKU) held a grand ceremony to celebrate its 110th founding anniversary at Yingjie Exchange Center on May 3. More than 300 school leaders, scholars and students participated in the event.


At the ceremony 

In his address, PKU President Hao Ping spoke highly of Geology Department, saying that it boasts long history, top-notch scholars, abundant accomplishments and a promising future. Hao fully recognized the work of the Department in the past 110 years and expected that it would make more achievements in the future. He hoped the Department could focus on its core mission of cultivating more top talents as well as high-level innovative teams in the field of geology.

Zhang Lifei, dean of Geology Department, PKU, delivered a speech. He said that the Department, founded in 1909, was the first of its kind back then in Chinese higher institutions. 110 years later, outstanding graduates have already spread all over the world. Most notably, 54 graduates became academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering. Zhang reviewed the achievements made by Geology Department respectively in talent cultivation, academic research and faculty recruitment. He also expressed his gratitude to the supports offered by people from all walks of life.

Cheng Qiuming, president of International Union of Geological Sciences, made a speech. He hoped that Geology Department could take full advantage of interdisciplinary integration, aim at the frontiers of science, and make forward-looking and pioneering achievements in the key scientific issues of geoscience.

From May 1 to May 4, an exhibition of the history and achievements of geology at PKU was held at Yifu Building No.2 Square. On the afternoon of May 3, a symposium that celebrated the 110th founding anniversary of Geology Department, PKU was held. Alumni of Geology Department were invited to give reports, including CAS Academician Xu Zhiqin from School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Nanjing University, and CAS Academician Shu Degan from Department of Geology, Northwestern University.
