Peking University, Oct. 30, 2010: A "comprehensive" and "strategic" alliance between Peking University and Taiwan University (NTU) will be on agenda, as the two sides signed two memoranda during the meeting between PKU President Zhou Qifeng and visiting NTU President Lee Si-chen on Oct. 27. 

Beneficial attempts have been made since the two universities signed a memorandum about academic exchange in 1995. Besides the exchange, scientific research and cultivation of talents are also promoted through the collaboration. Nowadays mutual recognition of diploma has become a reality resulting from the increasing communication across the Taiwan Strait. To enlarge and deepen the collaboration, a committee at the university level has been set up.

As one important part of the alliance, the plan of jointly offering double-majors has been added to the agenda. It aims at broadening the students' horizon and cultivating elites with global competitiveness. In the near future, in addition to the existing exchange programs, the two universities will set up interactive classes, drawing support from the information technology to seek cooperation with first-class universities, hence richer resources can be afforded to promote both teaching and research levels.

The two universities also decided to hold meetings among the deans of related schools and departments, focusing on academic exchange. A series of exchange activities, especially "Taiwan University Day" in Beijing and "Peking University Day" in Taipei, Taiwan, will also be conducted around the end of this year.
