Professor Yu Kongjian's research selected as symbolic to global ecological planning
Jun 12, 2019
Peking University, June 12, 2019: In commemoration of the 50th publication anniversary of Design with Nature, a revolutionary masterpiece authored by ecological planning pioneer Ian McHarg, the University of Pennsylvania recently hosted an event themed on “Designing with Nature Now”. In the event, a total of 25 research projects on ecological planning were selected and recognized as symbolic in the past five decades by the most authoritative experts in this field. Among them, National Ecological Security Pattern Plan, a project undertaken by Professor Yu Kongjian’s team from College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, Peking University, is on the list.

The project was to develop geospatial plans on a national scale that indicated where the “ecological security” (i.e. ecological health) of land should be prioritized. The plans were to address issues such as water catchment protection, flood control, desertification, soil erosion, and biodiversity conservation. This research represents an emerging recognition at the highest levels of government that ecological concerns are in the Chinese economic interest and should be reflected in Chinese land use planning guidelines. Moreover, it is noteworthy that the research has been widely cited, at nearly 18,000 times.
