“When you come to Peking University, you should first know what kind of university PKU is and why it has become a palace of academic research and even a spiritual palace for Chinese people,” said Qiu. Meanwhile, Qiu also reviewed the history of Peking University with pictures and stories, analyzed its status quo with reports and statistics, and illuminated the PKU spirit by introducing campus scenery and renowned scholars.

“During its 121-year history, Peking University has developed excellent traditions and distinctive culture,” said Qiu, who made three demands on every student: be faithful, study hard and stay true to the original aspirations.

The speech received warm applause and evoked a heated discussion among teachers and students. Several students said they felt touched and inspired by Qiu’s speech and were ready to devote themselves to China’s development just as generations of PKU students did.
