PKU Frontiers Science Center for Nano-optoelectronics inaugurated
Nov 14, 2019
Peking University, Nov. 13, 2019: On the morning of November 9, 2019, the inauguration ceremony of PKU Frontiers Science Center for Nano-optoelectronics was held in Science Lecture Hall of Zhongguan Xinyuan Global Village Building No. 1. Qiu Shuiping, chairman of PKU Council, Li Shushen, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lei Chaozi, director-general of the Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education (MOE), Xu Qiang, head of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission (BSTC), and leading experts in this field were present, along with other officials from MOE, BSTC and PKU.

Nano-photonics is a frontier inter-disciplinary study of integrated nano-photons and microelectronics. With advantages in high-speed information processing of electronics and huge communication capacity of photons, it has received wide attention from academics and industries in recent years, becoming an extremely active research focus in the field of optoelectronics. The Center, focusing on nano-electronics physics and devices, nano-optical fusion and testing, nano-optical electronics chip and application, aims to together research forces from various fields, including optics, condensed matter physics, microelectronics and solid electronics, communication and information systems, to promote integration of multiple disciplines.

Inauguration ceremony

On behalf of MOE, Lei Chaozi congratulated the official opening of PKU Frontiers Science Center for Nano-optoelectronics, and expressed sincere thanks to the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), BSTC and other relevant agencies for their strong support. He pointed out that, socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, requiring universities not only to make strides in original innovation and talent cultivation, but also to establish an organized scientific research mechanism and become an academic highland with the role of an international “leader”. MOE has put forward a new operation and management mechanism for the frontier science center, with "solid physical space, experienced research team, concrete task target, firm investment guarantee and real long-term effectiveness" at its core.

Xu Qiang fully affirmed the contribution of Peking University in brain sciences, artificial intelligence, Huairou Science City and many other innovation mechanisms. PKU Frontiers Science Center for Nano-optoelectronics, he pointed out, has a research objective that is in line with the current national strategic needs and moreover, its management system and operation mode is very innovative. Pledging that Beijing would promote cooperation between universities and enterprises, he wished that PKU Frontiers Science Center for Nano-optoelectronics could become the leading photoelectric research institution in Beijing and even across the country.

Xie Xincheng, vice president of NSFC, said that cross-disciplinary research has been the trend of the times. Major outputs of the basic research are also mostly characterized by cross-disciplines. Focusing on important cross-cutting frontiers of nano-photons and micro-nano-electronics, PKU Frontiers Science Center for Nano-optoelectronics would help to break discipline boundaries, home in on major scientific problems, and conduct innovation research that is basic, forward-looking, multi-disciplinary and deeply cross-integrated.

Gong Qihuang, vice president of Peking University, emphasized Peking University’s rich tradition and long-term advantages in basic scientific research. PKU’s research is invariably guided by major original innovation and major landmark achievements, by world's scientific and technological frontier, and by the country's major needs. The Frontiers Science Center is an innovative base for forward-looking, strategic and cutting-edge basic research, which is consistent with the idea of basic scientific research in the development of Peking University.

After the inauguration ceremony, Zhang Ning, director of the Office of Scientific Research of Peking University, announced the appointment of the academic committee and the central management team. Xiao Yunfeng, representative of PKU Frontiers Science Center for Nano-optoelectronics, reported on the background, strategic objectives and operation of the center, and demonstrated the its progress in innovation achievements, personnel training, infrastructure and the introduction of talents in the past year.

A symposium for nano-electronics was held subsequently after the inauguration ceremony. Huang Yongzhen, researcher at the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang Guoping, professor at Shenzhen University, and many other renowned scholars made academic reports.
