Ministry of Science and Technology inspects PKU-THU Center for Life Sciences

Peking University, Dec. 3, 2019: On November 19, a delegation of officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China (MOST) and other experts paid an inspection visit to Peking University. The inspection was conducted to learn how PKU-THU Center for Life Sciences (CLS) fosters a researcher-friendly environment.

Professor Zhang Pingwen, assistant to Peking University President, welcomed the officials from MOST and introduced the leading role of CLS in PKU’s disciplinary development. He also emphasized the importance of breaking utilitarian atmosphere in scientific community. He Defang, deputy secretary general of MOST, revealed the purpose of the inspection and his expectation. He stated that the blind pursuit of papers, titles, degrees and awards should be abandoned. He hoped that a sound and effective mechanism for project management and evaluation can be established in the near future.


During the discussion, research fellows at the PKU-THU Center for Life Sciences shared their views and experiences, highlighting the constant support and an open research environment at the Center. They added that whether early-career researchers or award-winning scientists, the Center treats them in an equal manner instead of putting excessive emphasis on papers, titles, degrees and awards.
