[Caizhai Lecture] PKU Professor Huang Xiaojun share his insights about medical science and doctors
Dec 19, 2019
Peking University, Nov. 14, 2019: Hippocrates, also known as "the Father of Western Medicine", said 2000 years ago no matter how we adored the magic of medicine, one should always keep humanity in mind. On November 12, Professor Huang Xiaojun from Peking University Health Science Center gave a lecture to illustrate the nature of medicine from perspectives of science and humanities.

Professor Huang giving the lecture

Backed by real-life experiences and expert viewpoints, Huang first cited the definition of medical science in Cihai, a Chinese encyclopedic dictionary, to argue that medicine owns both scientific and humane attributes. Therefore, doctors are supposed to pursue scientific truth and humanistic values at the same time.

He then moved on to discuss how to become a great doctor. When it comes to seeking truth from scientific facts, Huang said, it is crucial to strengthen capabilities based on rich knowledge. With examples such as the "Beijing Solution", he explained the scientific workflow of medical research: 1. raise questions from waht has been observed in clinics; 2. enhance the ability in translational research; 3. confirm hypotheses with clinical trials; 4. solve problems with research findings and achieve innovation and breakthroughs.

At the same time, from the perspective of doctor-patient relationship, Huang believed although doctors and nurses should receive education in humanistic values, patients also need to know the humanistic attributes of medical science.

At the end of the lecture, Huang answered questions from students about how to develop narrative medicine, how to overcome obstacle, etc. Huang hoped that medical students and professionals should learn from failure and thrive on pressure.
