Peking University hosts Symposium on Scientific Research

Peking University, April 3, 2020: The Symposium on Scientific Research was held in the form of video conference on March 31. PKU leadership, representatives and experts from relevant fields attended the conference. The purpose of the meeting is to review the progress and achievements of scientific research on epidemic prevention and control in the previous stage, promote the smooth development of scientific research in the next stage, and chart the course for future research directions.


At the meeting

Hao Ping, president of Peking University, pointed out that since the beginning of the Spring Semester, the whole University has made all-out efforts to the prevention and control of COVID-19 pandemic, achieving significant progress in online education and pandemic-related research. Hao hoped that all relevant departments, while continuing to implement various measures for epidemic prevention and control, would actively promote scientific research, strengthen international cooperation and exchanges, and draw up plans for the long-term development of PKU’s scientific research.

Zhan Qimin, executive vice president of Peking University, introduced the recent work of medical research. In 2019, Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC) made a series of achievements in many aspects. Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, aside from sending medical teams to the front line, it also made joint anti-epidemic efforts with hospitals in Beijing, carrying out research on virus detection, emergency prevention and control, clinical treatment, epidemiology, vaccines and drugs, policy research, etc. Focusing on the overall objectives, Zhan introduced the focus of medical research work in 2020 and the blueprint in the next stage.

Wang Bo, vice president of Peking University, introduced the research work of humanities and social sciences. Since this year, Peking University has made a series of important achievements and won multiple awards, making steady progress in many major projects. Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the research teams have been doing a good job in steadily promoting the work of key projects, and actively making suggestions to the central government for policymaking. Going forward, the liberal arts research teams will focus on key projects surrounding discipline evaluation, project support, academic platform construction, institutional management, etc.

Huang Ru, vice president of Peking University, introduced the research work of science and engineering. Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the University proactively responded to the needs of epidemic prevention and control, undertook national emergency tasks, and achieved a series of phased progress and achievements. Facing the impact of the pandemic on scientific research, the research teams will continue to do well in online scientific research and carry out field research in a safe and orderly manner. Huang also set the main goals for future development based on the overall situation of scientific research in 2020.

In addition, representatives of the School of Life Sciences, the School of Basic Medical Sciences and the School of Government spoke at their respective branch venues and exchanged their views on the development of scientific research.
