International Sinology studies in 30 years

Peking University, May 20, 2011: An international forum on Sinology opened at Peking University on May 13.

 

With the theme of "Theories, methods, and practice of international Sinology in 30 years," the forum of Chinese scholars and German female Sinologists was organized by the PKU International Academy of Chinese Studies (IACS) and the PKU Center for Research on Ancient Chinese History.

 

It was also the launching ceremony of the book Mediating Between Two Worlds – Oral History of German Female Sinologists. Most of the Sinologists the book covers began their research careers at Peking University.

 

 

 

 

 

Addressing the opening ceremony of the forum PKU Council Vice Chairman Yang He expounded the value of Chinese and German scholars' cooperation and communication, which contribute to the advance of Sinology. Professor Yang said he hopes the forum could become a platform for the Chinese and German scholars along with the rest of world to deepen mutual understanding, and in turn, to generate new achievements.

 

Xu Lin, director-general of Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters), expressed her respect to the German female Sinologists, adding that she appreciated the enlightening perspectives brought by those female scholars.

 

Some 70 experts and scholars from Germany, China, and the US attended the ceremony and were to discuss such topics as how to treat the traditional research on Sinology, the theoretical and methodological difference between Sinology and Chinese studies, the gender research's influence on Sinology, and 30 years' development and future trends of Sinology studies in Europe during the 2-day event.
